Bat-Villain Glossary

Here’s a list of some of the MVPs in Batman’s Rogues Gallery.

The Joker

The Clown Prince of Crime. Played by Cesar Romero, who refused to shave off his mustache for the role. Taunts Batman with clown-themed weapons such as buzzers, laughing gas, silly string, and squirting flowers.

The Penguin

A waddling, long-nosed crook played by Burgess Meredith. Carries a weapon umbrella that shoots out knockout gas. Once ran for Mayor of Gotham City. Quacks a lot.

The Riddler

Wears a green leotard or green suit decorated with question marks. Played by Frank Gorshin for most of the series, except for two episodes in which he is played by John Astin. Leaves riddles at the scene of the crime that, if solved correctly, point toward his next crime.

Catwoman

A slinky cat burglar. Played by Julie Newmar in seasons 1 and 2, Lee Meriwether in the film version of the series, and Eartha Kitt in season 3. Dresses like a cat, commits cat-themed crimes. Complicated love-hate relationship with Batman.

King Tut

Egypt-themed villain, played by Victor Buono. Mild-mannered Yale professor most of the time, but becomes an evil supervillain when conked on the head. Believes he’s the ancient Egyptian king reincarnated and means to rule Gotham City.

Egghead

An egg-themed villain, played by Vincent Price. A genius. Once deduced that Bruce Wayne is Batman. Has teamed up with Olga, Queen of the Cossacks and her band of Bessarobian outlaws.

Mr. Freeze

A cold-themed villain, played by George Sanders, Otto Preminger, and Eli Wallach at different points throughout the series. Carries a freezing gun which will freeze anything it touches, including Batman and Robin (unless, of course, they’re wearing their super-thermalized Bat Skivvies).

Marsha, Queen of Diamonds

A criminal with a diamond obsession played by Carolyn Jones. Able to hypnotize men with the help of her Aunt Hilda’s love potion. Almost coerced Batman into marrying her so that she could own the Bat-Diamond.

The Mad Hatter

A hat-obsessed criminal, played by David Wayne. Once contaminated Batman’s cowl with radioactive spray so that it turned pink.

Shame

A Western-themed rogue, played by Cliff Robertson. Dresses like a cowboy. Criminal associates include Okie Annie and Calamity Jan.

Louie the Lilac

A flower-themed gangster, played Mitlon Berle. Once tried to corner the flower market with his fake flowers. Kidnapped the hippie Princess Primrose and hypnotized her with his stupefying aromatic spray, hoping to use her to control the entire Flower Generation.

False Face

A master of disguise, played by Malachi Throne. Likes everything to be false. Often says the opposite of what he means. His criminal associate is Blaze, a woman of many wigs.
